BIO-PSYCHO-SOCIAL

The overlap between our biology, sociology, and psychology is where life happens. NYLO founders, Sean and Elena incorporate techniques from weight training, yoga, gymnastics, and massage to build strength, endurance, and mobility. But movement is not an isolated phenomenon. Its tendrils branch out and touch every other aspect of life. Food and nutrition even more so. Our relationships with nutrition and movement are not solely biological they are inextricably psycho-social as well.

“Until You Make The Unconscious Conscious, It Will Direct Your Life And You Will Call It Fate.”

Carl Jung, Swiss Psychiatrist, Psychoanalyst, and Founder of Analytical Psychology

There are four stages to motor learning:

1. Unconscious Dysfunction - “Wait, I’ve been doing this wrong?!”

2. Conscious Dysfunction - “Oh, I see now. I am definitely doing this wrong.”

3. Conscious Function - “I can do it right if I really focus.”

4. Unconscious Function - “Now it’s effortless. Second nature.”

NYLO personal training uses the body as a tool to train the mind. Movement practice develops strength and power in the muscles and causes new neural connections in the brain to form and strengthen in the brain. As neurons are fired together, they wire together. This process physically changes the connectome (roadmap of the mind) by turning our most used neural pathways from dirt roads into superhighways. Movement and nutrition habits also have profound effects on our hormonal and endocrine system which in turn effects our psychology and how we treat ourselves which in turn effects our social context and how we treat others.

Mindful observation without evaluation is a powerful tool from Nonviolent Communication. NYLO personal training uses these observations to explore the motivations and assumptions that drive our habits and behaviors. We provide a framework to explore and refine our operating assumptions in order to create more beneficial outcomes. Our clients typically spend 4 hours per week with their trainers. NYLO uses concepts from behavioral economics, evolutionary psychology, and Nonviolent Communication to design a lifestyle and environment that will ‘nudge’ clients towards their aspirational self for the other 164 hours in the week.
